Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab has described local election results as a "mixed bag" and says there were areas where it had been "uneven".

He told Sophy Ridge his party is taking the results "very seriously" and understands there were issues raised.

Mr Raab also added that the government is focused on "unlocking" the problems with the Northern Ireland Protocol and want to see it "fixed".

Nigel Farage says Reform UK has pulled off a major breakthrough after winning hundreds of seats and taking control of more councils across England. He claimed the results prove Reform can now win in both Tory and Labour strongholds, from Essex and Suffolk to parts of the Midlands and the North. The party also took its first London borough in Havering and made gains in Wales, while saying it can now compete seriously in Scotland too. Farage says this is not just a protest vote, but the start of a deeper political realignment with more voters fully switching to Reform.

Shadow Levelling Up Secretary Lisa Nandy has told Sophy Ridge that Sir Keir Starmer had been on a "work visit" when he was pictured having a takeaway with colleagues before going on to say the last few weeks had been an "absolutely desperate attempt to sling mud" at Labour by the Tories.

"Keir Starmer went on a work visit and had a break to eat," she said. "The idea that this is the same thing [as events in Downing Street] is just a sign of a government that is tired, desperate and just out of ideas.

"They spend more time slinging mud at the Labour Party than working out how they're going to help pensioners who are now struggling so much to heat their homes that they're having to go on buses to avoid the cold."
