This episode discovers just how expensive it is to live in Monaco. Average property prices are around twice as much as in London's most exclusive district, Mayfair. One of the main reasons for this is that to qualify for official residency in Monaco (and the financial benefits this brings), you have to own or lease a residence, so demand outstrips supply. The episode takes a tour of an extraordinary new home Villa Troglodyte, which has come onto the market. Built as if carved out of the rock, the price is only 23 million because it doesn't have a sea view. The pressure to build more houses in a small country that is so short on space has left Prince Albert with a challenge. He attends meetings about a huge, new, two-billion-euro land extension project he has initiated. Extending into the sea is a complex operation but once complete, the largest villas there are estimated to sell for around 100 million euros

The rich in Germany been never been as well-off as they are today and assets have never been so unevenly distributed. But who are they? How do they live? And what do they think of their country? A journey into the discreet world of the super-rich.

One percent of Germans own over a quarter of the country's assets, whilst half of the country’s citizens have no assets at all. But while the German media report on the growing poverty in the country on a daily basis, little is known about the super-rich. They keep a very low profile and can walk the streets unrecognized. "Manager Magazin” says there were around 200 billionaires living in Germany in 2018, and their numbers are increasing. The documentary "Top of the World" asks why rich Germans are so unwilling to talk about their wealth. Its author immerses himself in the discreet world of big money and meets financial advisors with 800 years of family tradition behind them and billionaires such as drugstore king Dirk Rossmann and mail-order company heir Michael Otto - as well as self-made businessmen such as Rainer Schaller. They talk about their notions of money and justice, the origins of their wealth and their fear of social envy.

It’s the new housing trend. Entire private neighbourhoods – sometimes spanning several hundreds of hectares and complete with luxury facilities, private schools and shops – all under extreme security and banned to non-residents.

In gated communities like MacDonald Highlands, residents can dine at private restaurants, play a game of tennis or enjoy a round of golf. They have their own personal trainers permanently on-call. But life here isn’t cheap. Just the obligatory gym and club memberships come to over $700 a month. And, in addition to the high maintenance charges, residents are expected to adopt a certain lifestyle and comply with strict regulations. At MacDonald Highlands, among the many rules, it is forbidden for children under 14 to walk around alone. Also banned is the use of skateboards and scooters and making noise after 10pm. Offences like not taking down Christmas lights within the required period or having a less-than-immaculate garden are all punished with a fine.

It used to be that these gated communities were home only to super-rich Americans but now they’re appearing across the globe and are shaping new residences of the future. Over in Marseille, security-conscious real estate owners have petitioned the City Council to erect barriers and close off entire neighborhoods. The first gated community has opened in Sofia, Bulgaria.

But as more and more people take refuge behind walls, will the remaining public space be turned into a giant ghetto?

About Author: Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 – March 26, 1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. In 1932, at the age of forty-four, Chandler became a detective fiction writer after losing his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. His first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in 1933 in Black Mask, a popular pulp magazine. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. In addition to his short stories, Chandler published seven novels during his lifetime (an eighth, in progress at the time of his death, was completed by Robert B. Parker). All but Playback have been made into motion pictures, some more than once. In the year before his death, he was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America.

About the book: Farewell, My Lovely is a 1975 American neo-noir crime thriller film directed by Dick Richards and featuring Robert Mitchum as private detective Philip Marlowe. The picture is based on Raymond Chandler's novel Farewell, My Lovely (1940), which had previously been adapted for film as Murder, My Sweet in 1944. The supporting cast features Charlotte Rampling, John Ireland, Jack O'Halloran, Sylvia Miles and Harry Dean Stanton, with an early screen appearance by Sylvester Stallone, and hardcore crime novelist Jim Thompson, in his only acting role, as Charlotte Rampling's character's elderly husband, Judge Grayle. Mitchum returned to the role of Marlowe three years later in the 1978 film The Big Sleep, making him the only actor to portray the character more than once in a feature film.
