The year 1066 was one of the most fateful in history. It was a year of battles, it was a year of invasions, and it is often cited as the beginning of the end of the Viking age.
Famously toward the end of the year, Harold Godwinson, King of England met William 'The Conquerer' Duke of Normandy on the field of battle at Hastings to determine who would take England.
However two equally epic battles had already taken place just weeks before just outside of York, between the English and the third king of 1066, Harald Hardrada of Norway.
A former commander of the Varangian Guard, Hardrada had spent a lifetime raiding and pillaging the known world, and in 1066 he played his dice for one last time as he attempted to take the throne of England.

Harald V, King of Norway has died at the age of 89. His majesty had been on the throne for 35 years, since January 17, 1991.

Upon the moment of his death, his son and heir apparent, acceded the throne as King Haakon VIII.
Let’s look back at the sailor King’s incredible life; a childhood escape from the Nazis, sailing in three Olympics, standing up for the right to marry the woman he loved, Queen Sonja, and serving his people for 33 years. During the interwar years fascism rose unchecked in parts of Europe. Continental Europe, that is. Great Britain however, seemed a lot more resilient. Why is that? Why did Germany, Italy and Spain fall to fascism (in Spain's case something like fascism-lite) while the United Kingdom reject their version of Hitler? To understand his failure we look at one of the most famous confrontations between fascists and anti-fascists in British History. We look at the Battle of Cable Street.

The role of religion in politics remains fraught with controversy. From the United States Declaration of Independence’s invocation of the ‘Creator’ endowing men with ‘certain unalienable Rights’, to the inscription on the Saudi flag reading ‘there is no God but Allah, Mohammed is the Prophet of Allah’, many states were founded on principles inspired by religion. On the other hand, there are many who reject the role of religion in politics. In France, the principle of Laïcité strictly divides the religious from the political. Meanwhile, secularist advocates in the United States have advocated for the removal of references to God on public buildings and currency. This roundtable discussion seeks to bring together a wide range of faiths to discuss the proper role of religion in politics. Does politics inevitably converge with religion? Or should religion, in this modern and increasingly secular age, decouple itself from politics?

[Speakers]

Prof Herb Silverman - Founder and President of the Secular Coalition for America and a Professor Emeritus at the College of Charleston. A committed atheist, he successfully struck down South Carolina’s religious requirement for public office and has authored various
advocacy pieces in favour of secularism.

Prof Bruce Gordon - Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale Divinity School. A late medieval and early modern historian, he has written foundational texts on the Reformation and Calvinism. Most recently, he has authored a book on the life of Swiss reformer Ulrich Zwingli.

Dr Miri Freud-Kandel - Fellow and Lecturer in Modern Judaism at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies. She was co-Editor of Modern Judaism: An Oxford Guide and has written extensively on Orthodox Judaism in modern Britain.

Obatala - The King Of The White Clothe & The Whole Story Of Humanity
In traditional Yoruba religion, Obatala is the second in command within the Yoruba pantheon of gods, somehow known as the deputy of the Supreme deity Olodumare. Often regarded as the founder of the first Yoruba city of Ife, Obatala is one of the oldest Orishas who was granted authority to create humanity. Though it was the supreme god, Olodumare(Olorun) who created the universe, Obatala is the heavenly father of every living thing brought to life by the supreme god. Obatala is often depicted as an old man with white robes that symbolizes peace, clarity of thoughts and wisdom. The Yoruba people often associate him with white substances such as white flowers, coconut, milk and rice. And just like the Orisha himself, the priesthood and worshipers of Obatala only wear white garments. In Yoruba, Oba means King and Tala or Ala to be specific means undyed fabric, so he is the blank canvas, the King of the White Cloth believed to be a peaceful judge. According to the Yoruba tradition, Obatala is the only Orisha who has an equal number of both male and female paths, probably because he is the father of creation and thus can’t be thought of having a specific gender. This is the reason why in terms of sacrifices, the orisha Obatala who is usually conceived as male figure is the only male Orisha who eats in the female circle. The Orisha Obatala is central to the creation myth of the Yoruba cultures of West Africa, where he is counted among a group of specific entities known as the white gods of creativity and justice.

Heading towards the projects’ completion, CALIPER and sister Horizon2020 project, LeTSGEPs co-hosted their final conference on Thursday, 23 November 2023, an event attended by a total number of 150 people physically and online. In this video Lina Gálvez Muñoz, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and member of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, European Union Parliament gives a keynote speech regarding the gender equality policies in European level and EU's actions for the integration of Gender Equality in Research & Innovation ecosystems across Europe.

The event was hosted by Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), member of CALIPER consortium. Organised in three main parts, the conference brought together project partners, researchers (including post-doc and PhD students), innovation leaders, decision-makers, European Commission representatives, HR practioners and Gender Equality pundits to highlight the projects’ main outcomes, reflect upon shared challenges, as well as actions for achieving long-term, inclusive and sustainable institutional change in terms of gender equality measures and the integration of gender dimension in research.

The event launched the CALIPER Charter of Gender+ Inclusive R&I Ecosystems, that aims at reaching out to new stakeholders and networks across Europe to foster lasting structural change. the signature and endorsement process of the Charter will be opened during the conference. Furthermore, participants got a copy of the LeTSGEPs Handbook, a publication that provides guidelines for the implementation of GEPs and Gender Budgeting, for achieving gender equality in Research Organisations.

Al-Nakba: The Palestinian catastrophe

"The Nakba did not begin in 1948. Its origins lie over two centuries ago…."

So begins this four-part series on the 'nakba', meaning the 'catastrophe', about the history of the Palestinian exodus that led to the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948, and the establishment of the state of Israel.

This sweeping history starts back in 1799 with Napoleon's attempted advance into Palestine to check British expansion and his appeal to the Jews of the world to reclaim their land in league with France.

The narrative moves through the 19th century and into the 20th century with the British Mandate in Palestine and comes right up to date in the 21st century and the ongoing 'nakba' on the ground.

Arab, Israeli and Western intellectuals, historians and eye-witnesses provide the central narrative which is accompanied by archive material and documents, many only recently released for the first time.

For Palestinians, 1948 marks the 'nakba' or the 'catastrophe', when hundreds of thousands were forced out of their homes.

But for Israelis, the same year marks the creation of their own state.

This series attempts to present an understanding of the events of the past that are still shaping the present.

This story starts in 1799, outside the walls of Acre in Ottoman-controlled Palestine, when an army under Napoleon Bonaparte besieged the city. It was all part of a campaign to defeat the Ottomans and establish a French presence in the region.

In search of allies, Napoleon issued a letter offering Palestine as a homeland to the Jews under French protection. He called on the Jews to ‘rise up’ against what he called their oppressors.

Napoleon’s appeal was widely publicised. But he was ultimately defeated. In Acre today, the only memory of him is a statue atop a hill overlooking the city.

Yet Napoleon's project for a Jewish homeland in the region under a colonial protectorate did not die, 40 years later, the plan was revived but by the British.

The words of the initiator and artistic director of the project, Biljana Jotic, come from needs and motives:... Documenting thought and creative processes, this series in seven episodes brings together artists and curators from Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia and Northern Macedonia, and is part of the international two-year project that includes various activities that talk about gender equality, the position and presence of women in artistic, cultural and social reality.

The idea for the series was initiated by the awareness of the growing presence of women in contemporary art, which stems from the desire to influence the new context of reaction to reality. We are witnesses that there have always been women who appear and leave an indelible mark in history and society, and this exhibition gathers more of them and carries a message about the present.
The focus is on the present moment, so each episode testifies to the inner female being and the relationship of the individual to the collective and vice versa. In dialogue with the generations of the 21st century, the director strives to show how women shape contemporary Balkan cultural reality and how she shapes women. Through the diversity of forms of women's creative identity, in personal expressions, techniques and media, the series documents reflections on the most challenging and open questions of the diversity of our time that connects the notion of art. By connecting institutional and non-institutional artistic practices, the series strives to approach the documentation of one part of contemporary movements of women in art in the most comprehensive way possible.
