How many days of food and water do governments tell households to keep at home? A Newsweek map published October 28, 2026 lists 33 countries with official home-preparedness advice. Most of this advice has been around for years and is updated from time to time.

In this video we go through what the guidance actually says. Three days, or 72 hours, is the most common advice: the UK, France, Canada, Japan, Mexico and the Netherlands all use it. Sweden and Norway ask households to manage for at least one week. Germany says 10 days if possible, and says even 3 days is a big help. In the US, Ready.gov says "several days." The reasons governments give include extreme weather, power and service outages, cyber threats and, in some countries, war or security concerns.

What you'll learn:
- Which countries are on the Newsweek map, and how much time each one advises
- Why advice ranges from 72 hours to 10 days
- What most official kit checklists have in common: water, non-perishable food, medicines, a flashlight, a battery or wind-up radio, batteries and some cash
- How to start small and build up gradually, without panic buying
