You wake on a straw mattress above a shoemaker's shop in London, in April 1349. The church bells are already tolling, the street smells of smoke and rubbish, and the bed beside yours is empty. London is the biggest and richest city in England, and nobody in it knows how to stop what is happening.

In this episode you live one day of the worst spring in London's history as a young shoemaker's apprentice. You will fetch clean water from the Great Conduit on Cheapside, dodge pigs and red kites in streets the king himself called foul, and watch the number of wills in the city jump to about twenty times normal. You will find out why the famous beak-masked plague doctor never walked these streets, what diggers found in the emergency burial grounds at Smithfield, and why scientists still argue about whether rats were really to blame. Then the sickness comes into your own house.
