The pathophysiology of these disorders stem from a dysfunction of endocrine system, particularly in the adrenal cortex and pituitary glands.
Cushing’s disease is a condition where there is too much steroid production leading to classic signs and symptoms like edema, buffalo hump, hirsutism (harry body), and moon shaped face.
Addison’s disease is a condition where there is too little steroid production leading to a weak and thin body, with low blood pressure. Classic signs and symptoms of Addison’s disease include hyperkalemia & tanned hyperpigmentation of the skin. Addisonian Crisis or Adrenal Crisis is a deadly condition that can develop from too much added stress (surgery, sepsis, emotional), this is where the body can not respond to stress and the drop in blood pressure is so severe that patients go into shock and die.
Treatment of Addisons often include steroid administration: prednisone, hydrocortisone and IV fluids.
