This video covers every inaugural from George Washington to Joe Biden (1789 – 2021). Contemporaneous music is provided in the first half of the video mainly due to the lack of audio captured in the earlier inaugurals. From George Washington to Andrew Jackson (1789 – 1833), only George Washington’s first inaugural (1789) was captured by a contemporaneous illustration. To compensate, I decided to fill in the blank years by using contemporaneous paintings or illustrations of either the buildings where the inaugurals took place or of the ceremonies taking place shortly before or after. Worst case scenario, I had to resort to using a more modern depiction of the events. I also provide descriptions of what took place to compensate for the lack of illustrations of the oath itself.

From Martin Van Buren to Franklin Pierce (1837 – 1853), most of the inaugurals were captured by contemporaneous illustrations. The only exceptions are the inaugurals of John Tyler (1841) and Millard Fillmore (1850) where the Vice President had to succeed their fallen predecessor.

From James Buchannan to Grover Cleveland (1857 – 1893), the inaugurals are mainly captured in photographs. The only exceptions are the inaugurals of Andrew Johnson (1865) and Chester Arthur (1881) where the Vice President had to succeed their fallen predecessor.

From William McKinley to Calvin Coolidge (1897 – 1925), the inaugurals are mainly captured on silent films. The only exceptions are the inaugurals of Theodore Roosevelt (1901) and Calvin Coolidge (1923) where the Vice President had to succeed their fallen predecessor.

From Herbert Hoover to Dwight D. Eisenhower (1929 – 1953), the inaugurals are mainly captured on black and white films (b/w) with sound. The only exception was the inaugural of Harry S. Truman (1945) where it was captured on film but with no audio.

From Dwight D. Eisenhower to Joseph R. Biden Jr. (1957 – 2021), the inaugurals are mainly captured on films in color and with sound. The only exception was the inaugural of Lyndon B. Johnson (1963) where it was only captured in photographs and audio.
