An Italian anti-abortion Organisation says it has more than 400 women who are prepared to adopt unclaimed British embryos due to be destroyed on Thursday.

The move puts the Catholic church in a difficult moral dilemma.

The Vatican is against all forms of artificial procreation, but says it also has a duty to preserve life.

Threading through the sensitive ethics raised by fertility technology, the Vatican is divided over the problem of frozen embryos.

The Catholic church is against artificial procreation, but does not want to see any embryo destroyed.

Now a Cardinal has suggested the adoption of embryos due to be destroyed as a last resort to save them.

Ideally the Catholic church says it wants to stop the production of frozen embryos.

John Paul the Second has intervened in the past in a very firm and decisive way, launching the following appeal to all governments. "Let us stop the machine that produces embryos." I think this is the right choice and the one all governments and all medical operators should take.

There's been a widespread response in Italy to the Church's call to save the embryos from destruction.

In the Tuscan city of Massa Carrara, more than 100 women have presented themselves to the local anti-abortion centre to adopt the embryos.

One woman says it's a natural choice for anyone who has already given life.

This is a choice to avoid these people being killed. For me the embryos are people, they are not things, they are not objects, they not just for scientific research.

The head of the centre says he's been inundated by calls from women who are ready to adopt these embryos and hopes the British government will rethink its decision to destroy them.

Up to today, we already have the formal backing of 400 women who have all publicly accepted the adoptions. But I know that in the rest of Italy the Centres for Help To Life are receiving dozens of further subscriptions daily. This is a mobilisation which is truly laudable, because it makes us understand that we still have a heart.

It's a problem fraught with difficulties. Infertile women want to have the chance to give life, but the disposal of unwanted embryos has created a moral storm.
