Plot Summary

Set during World War II, the story follows Robert Crain, a German-born anti-Nazi living under British control. Forced into a dangerous mission, he must infiltrate a German cargo ship transporting vital rubber supplies to the Reich.

Crain’s task is to sabotage the ship, ensuring it never reaches its destination. As tension grows, Crain faces a profound moral dilemma: complete the mission at the cost of innocent lives, or defy orders in the name of humanity.

Meaning of the Title

Those Who Are Doomed reflects the ancient Latin phrase “Morituri te salutant” —

“Those who are about to die salute you.”

The title emphasizes the tragic fate shared by soldiers and civilians alike, regardless of which side they serve.

Critical Perspective

Though not a commercial success upon release, the film has gained recognition as a thoughtful and restrained anti-war film, praised for its performances—particularly Marlon Brando’s introspective portrayal—and its refusal to glorify violence.
