The story centers on Janet Freeman, a young woman who has been haunted by nightmares ever since she witnessed her mother murder her father when she was a child. Her mother was then confined to an insane asylum, and Janet fears that she might inherit her mother’s insanity.
Janet’s nightmares grow worse while she is at her finishing school, and she is sent home to her family’s large old house to recover. There, her guardian Henry Baxter and his newly hired companion Grace Maddox try to help her — but dark visions continue, including eerie appearances of a mysterious woman in white.
Things take a dramatic turn when Janet believes the nightmare figures are real and violence erupts, leading to shocking revelations and twists that blur the line between dreams and reality.
