A new twist has emerged in the investigation into five men arrested near RAF Fairford after one of the suspects reportedly called 999 himself before police were alerted by a farmer who had seen masked men and suspicious vehicles near the Gloucestershire airbase.
The five British nationals, aged between 23 and 25, were arrested on September 27 after three suspicious vans were spotted close to the base. The incident triggered a major security operation, with armed officers deployed, a 400-metre cordon established, bomb-disposal specialists examining the vehicles and residents from 85 nearby households evacuated.
