Obatala is an important deity in both Santeria (also known as Lukumi) and various West African religions, particularly in the Yoruba religion, where he holds a prominent place. Obatala is one of the Orishas, a group of deities that play a central role in the spiritual and religious practices of the Yoruba people.

In Yoruba religion and Santeria, Obatala is often associated with concepts of purity, wisdom, creativity, and justice. He is regarded as the father of all Orishas and is considered to be the creator of humanity. Obatala is typically depicted as an elderly figure dressed in white, symbolising purity and coolness.

In Santeria, which is a syncretic religion that combines Yoruba beliefs with elements of Roman Catholicism, Obatala is often syncretised with the Catholic figure of the Virgin Mary, particularly as Our Lady of Mercy (Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes). This syncretism allows practitioners to worship Obatala while appearing to venerate a Christian figure to avoid persecution during periods when the practice of African religions was suppressed.

Devotees of Obatala often seek his guidance and blessings for matters related to health, justice, creativity, decision-making, wisdom, peace, and other aspects of life. Rituals and offerings are made to honour and connect with Obatala, and these may include the use of white clothing, white candles, and specific foods associated with him. These foods include white rice, cassava, white beans, coconut, white eggs, and rice pudding.

The understanding of Obatala may differ between West African Yoruba religion and its diasporic counterparts like Santeria.
