Rising Xenophobia: Nigeria Launches Mass Repatriation from South Africa

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated arrangements to repatriate over 1,000 Nigerians from South Africa amid rising anti-immigrant sentiment and xenophobic tensions. Screening for the voluntary return programme began on Thursday, with authorities coordinating closely with Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria to ensure a smooth and safe process.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa confirmed that waivers were secured for citizens with immigration-related offences to leave the country without detention. Acting High Commissioner Temitope Ajayi has also been actively engaged in facilitating the repatriation.
