On June 10, 2014, Mosul, once the second-largest city in Iraq and a centre of trade, culture, and diversity, fell completely. Tens of thousands of residents fled across the Tigris River toward Kurdish-controlled areas, while those who remained were subjected to ISIS's rule. The loss of Mosul was a national humiliation for Iraq. For many Iraqis, it symbolised the total collapse of the post-2003 order… For ISIS, it marked the birth of its self-declared caliphate.
