St Peter’s, Rome 3rd June 1963.
The square is filled with people, and filled with the chaos of an emotionally charged event. Something extraordinary is happening. Giovanni XXIII is dying. Thousands of people in the square at St Peter’s, and millions around the world are gathering to pray for the Pope in his final hours. An old priest is making his way through the hoards of people gathered in the square, where Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians are united in prayer. As if a member of their family were dying, they are suffering the pain and the inevitable grief of a lost one. The ancient Priest carries in his hand letter a letter so important that it must reach the Pope before it is too late.
John XXIII was Pope for only 4 years, seven months and six days, from the 28th of October to the 3rd of June 1963, in a period of profound change, and during a time which produced the most significant events of the 20th Century. The world was caught up in the precarious politics of The Cold War. In 1959 Fidel Castro overthrew the Batista dictatorship in Cuba and enforced his communist regime a short distance from the capitalist world. In the same year, the Dalai Lama fled from Tibet and broke off relations with the USSR and Cina. In 1961 the Berlin Wall was built; a tragic monument of ignorance and ideological hatred. At the same time the soviet astronaut, Yuri Gagarin completed the first ever orbit around the earth, beginning the way for future space travel. From the 18th to the 28th of October 1962, the US and USSR threatened the start of a third world war when they confronted each other over the missile crisis in Cuba. In 1963 the American military invasion of Vietnam escalated, and at the end of that same year, on the 22nd of November, John F Kennedy was assassinated.
In this extraordinary period of history, of high international tension, Pope John launched a powerful and incisive message of peace to the whole world, and the Church turned to him as it had never done before in the history of Christianity. He was the Pope who challenged the power of the Church with his second Vatican Council, a revolutionary event which caused the Catholic Church to re-examine itself and the historical hypocrisies that had moved it further and further from the learnings of Christ, as well as from the needs of modern-day man. The Second Vatican Council would bring the Church closer to the 20th Century, and closer to the rapid and fundamental changes that had taken place in the last century. Using the power of television and radio, as Kennedy and Khrushchev had done, he enforced his campaign for world peace upon the world – a message that today is seen as a determining factor in bringing about the end of the Cold War.
