Dr. Clive Esmond (Alexander Knox), a psychiatrist, offers Frank Clemmons (Dirk Bogarde), a convicted criminal, a chance at rehabilitation instead of prison. Frank, a dangerous young man, agrees to live with Dr Esmond and his wife, Glenda (Alexis Smith), under strict conditions. As Frank's time in the Esmond household progresses, Glenda becomes increasingly attracted to him, leading to a dangerous and passionate affair. The tension between Frank and Esmond grows as Glenda's affections shift, creating a dangerous and unpredictable dynamic.
