TRUMP PREDICTS US-CUBA DEAL | 12 AM News Headlines | Samaa English
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb to remain open, terming the vital waterways as “arteries of the global economy.” Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, PM Shehbaz has said Pakistan had played a key role in bringing the United States and Iran to the negotiating table as part of efforts to help end the conflict. He has said that Pakistan stood with the UN Charter and remained committed to global peace and prosperity.
Turkey's Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus says the Makkah defence pact between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye could eventually expand to include other countries across the Muslim world, including Iran. He said the agreement is not aimed at any specific country and is primarily focused on regional security and collective defence.
Meanwhile, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye have agreed to convene an urgent meeting of their chiefs of staff to discuss ways to support Saudi Arabia and strengthen coordination under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement. The three countries reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter and condemned Houthi attacks targeting Saudi civilian and economic infrastructure.
In New York, Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's UN General Assembly speech, referring to the International Criminal Court arrest warrant against Netanyahu. Mamdani's remarks came after Netanyahu criticised him during his address to the United Nations.
Pro-Palestinian protesters also marched through Manhattan following Netanyahu's UN speech. Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and called for a ceasefire, Palestinian freedom and an end to the war in Gaza, while demanding Netanyahu's arrest.
In another major development, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran remains ready to revive an agreement reached with US President Donald Trump and resolve outstanding issues through dialogue. Pezeshkian said Iran could lower uranium enrichment levels, accept international verification and return to negotiations, while maintaining that Iran was attacked without legal justification.
