UK Finance Minister John Healey has unveiled the government’s Budget measures in Parliament, announcing financial support for households facing higher energy costs amid the economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East, global trade tensions and Russia’s war in Ukraine. The package includes a £100 energy payment for around 20 million households in council tax bands A to D, costing £2.6 billion, and an extension of the five-pence fuel duty cut until July.
Healey also outlined plans to reduce energy costs through clean power investment and changes to renewable energy contracts, introduce tax relief for pensioners on incomes up to the full new state pension, and expand business rates relief for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses. Other measures include higher taxes on some gambling machines and income from property and savings, while the annual tax-free cash ISA allowance will remain at £20,000. Healey said the government would use existing fiscal headroom to support households while maintaining its commitment to reducing borrowing.
