UK Covid-19 Inquiry Starts to Hear Evidence on Resilience and Preparedness
The collateral consequences of shutting down society to fight Covid were barely considered, the inquiry's chief lawyer claimed yesterday.
As the probe finally kicked off, almost three-and-a-half years after the virus hit the UK, Hugo Keith KC said the lack of thought given to lockdowns was 'extraordinary'.
He told the first public hearing there was little debate over whether such measures proved necessary, nor how they could be avoided.
Mr Keith added: 'Very little thought was given to how — if it proved to be necessary — something as complex, difficult and damaging as a national lockdown could be put in place at all.
'Equally, there appears to have been a failure to think through the potentially massive impact on education and on the economy in trying to control a runaway virus in this way.'
