UK Govt 'Badly Underestimated' Russian Interference

A report handed down by the United Kingdom Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee has found the government ‘badly underestimated’ the threat from Moscow intelligence agencies.
The report revealed Russia meddled in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, while also criticising British security agency MI5 for not investigating possible Russian interference in the Brexit referendum due to the politically charged nature of the vote.
Scottish National Party MP Stewart Hosie said “the report reveals that no one in government knew whether Russia interfered in or sought to influence the referendum because they did not want to know”.
“The UK government have actively avoided looking for evidence that Russia interfered, we were told they hadn’t found any evidence but that is meaningless if they haven’t looked for it," he said.
The government denied claims it failed to investigate any meddling, saying there was no evidence of interference in the Brexit campaign.
