'Disinformation Emanating From Russia': Burnham Says Russia Interference In Brexit Referen
.
.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit referendum, claiming he received a clear confirmation after asking officials about possible foreign interference upon entering Downing Street. In an interview with The Rest Is Politics: Leading, released on October 11, Burnham also warned that Russian-linked misinformation and disinformation could influence political debates in Germany and France. He urged European democracies to be more transparent about attempts to disrupt their political processes.
Burnham did not disclose the evidence behind his statement or explain how Russia allegedly interfered in the Brexit vote. A 2020 report by the UK Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee said the government had failed to establish whether Russia meddled in the referendum, while finding that Russia had sought to influence Scotland’s 2014 independence referendum. Moscow has previously denied interfering in the Brexit vote. Burnham’s remarks reopen questions about foreign interference, democratic accountability and the protection of elections across Europe.
