Keir Starmer faced a fiery Prime Minister’s Questions today for the first time since he announced his resignation with Kemi Badenoch showing little sympathy for the outgoing leader.

The opposition leader dismissed Andy Burnham has "a pair of eyelashes and a black T-shirt" in a particularly brutal jibe. It came as she made comment about Labour MPs who had let the PM down. The Tory leader claimed Starmer's MPs had "abandoned him" after he "U-turned again and again and again to appease them" for "a pair of eyelashes and a black T-shirt".

The outgoing PM was in the Commons this afternoon as Andy Burnham gets busy as he begins to assemble his team as he prepares to fight for the top job in Downing Street. James Purnell is set a remarkable return to government with potential the Prime Minister-in-waiting expected to appoint his trusted former cabinet colleague as his chief of staff once he gets the keys to No10.

Mr Burnham has declared he will stand to replace Mr Starmer as Labour leader after the Prime Minister announced his No10 exit yesterday morning. He is currently unopposed, which could mean he is installed in Downing Street by mid July. But he could face a gruelling leadership contest if another MP throws their hat into the ring.
