A Man Betrayed (1941) is an American film noir political crime drama directed by John H. Auer.
Set in a corruption-riddled Midwestern city, it follows a small-town lawyer who arrives in the big city seeking justice for a friend's mysterious death—only to be pulled into a murky world of political machines, bribery, and murder in one of the earliest noir-infused legal thrillers of the 1940s.

Frank Powell, an idealistic attorney from Iowa, comes to the city after learning of his friend's supposed suicide at a nightclub. But what he finds is no accident. Beneath the surface lies a system of power, greed, and fear—where crooked politicians rule from the shadows and witnesses disappear without a trace. Refusing to back down, Powell digs deeper, uncovering a trail of lies that leads straight to the city’s top men.

Caught between honest citizens, double-crossing insiders, and a mysterious young woman who may or may not be on his side, Powell faces threats from every direction. As he builds his case against a powerful mayoral candidate, the line between legal justice and personal revenge begins to blur. The city wants him silenced. But he didn’t come to leave quietly.
