Andy Burnham: We Don’t Need to Level Down London for North to Prosper

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham today tells the people of London they do not need to be “levelled down” for the North to become more prosperous.

Speaking at the Evening Standard’s London Rising event, he said: “It doesn’t mean London being massively diminished, or that we have all got a downer on you.

“We will all feel better about London if we are getting more of what London has got.”

In the hard-hitting video interview, the man tipped by some to be Labour’s next leader, criticised Sir Keir Starmer’s reshuffle — and called on the party to give its regional mayors a bigger role.

On Sir Keir’s performance in the recent elections, which some have blamed on a lack of narrative or polices, Mr Burnham said Sir Keir needed “to set out his stall” quicker.
