(1980) | Full Movie | Morgan Freeman Prison Uprising Drama

This Saturday, we revisit a pivotal moment in U.S. history with Attica (1980), a powerful dramatization of the infamous prison rebellion that shocked the nation. Starring a young Morgan Freeman in one of his earliest major roles, Attica is a searing indictment of injustice, brutality, and the systemic failures of the American prison system.

????️ Feature Presentation: Attica (1980)

On September 9, 1971, nearly 1,300 inmates at Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York took control of the prison in protest of inhumane conditions, demanding civil rights, better medical care, religious freedom, and fair treatment. Over four tense days, the standoff made headlines across the world, culminating in a violent, deadly raid ordered by the state.

This dramatized account, based on real events, provides a human face to the uprising — capturing the desperation, courage, and tragic consequences of a moment where voices were raised and ignored at a deadly cost.

Morgan Freeman plays Charlie, one of the inmates caught in the middle of the chaos, marking an early performance that showcases the fire, compassion, and gravity that would define his legendary career.

???? About the Cast & Crew

Morgan Freeman: Before Glory, Driving Miss Daisy, and The Shawshank Redemption, Freeman brought depth and power to this intense historical role, giving early glimpses of the screen legend he would become.

George Grizzard as William Kunstler – the famed civil rights attorney who defended the inmates and their demands.

Charles Durning and Anthony Zerbe deliver standout performances in a cast full of tension and emotion.

Directed by Marvin J. Chomsky – an Emmy-winning filmmaker who directed acclaimed historical projects like Roots: The Next Generations and Holocaust.

???? Why This Film Still Matters

Attica is more than a historical film — it’s a reflection on state violence, racial injustice, and the brutal consequences of dehumanization. The legacy of Attica continues to echo in today’s conversations about mass incarceration, prison reform, and civil rights.
