Wes Streeting has apologised after being caught on a microphone joking about the Government’s controversial early-release scheme.

Speaking with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and new Justice Secretary Alex Norris, Streeting reportedly called Norris “the enemy now” and joked that he “wants to let them all out”.

The Defence Secretary said the remark was harmless “ribbing” based on an old joke between former prime minister Theresa May and former justice secretary Ken Clarke. However, he accepted that prisoner releases were a serious issue and apologised for causing offence. Mahmood also said there had been no ill intent.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused Burnham’s Cabinet of joking about criminals while victims were being ignored.

The controversy comes as thousands of prisoners could become eligible for earlier release under changes taking effect in September to tackle overcrowding.

Two men convicted of the manslaughter of Pc Andrew Harper may be among those eligible. His mother described the possibility of their early release as an “insult”.
