"Rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough." Those, according to Earl Spencer, are the words Prince Charles hissed down the phone at him in the days after Diana died.

The claim comes in Spencer's new book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, being serialised in the Daily Mail this week ahead of publication next Tuesday. And it has produced something genuinely without precedent: a King of England, through Buckingham Palace, all but calling his former brother-in-law a crazy liar.

In this video I take you through exactly what Spencer alleges, and exactly how the Palace has hit back. Spencer's account begins with a row over whether William and Harry, then 15 and 12, should walk behind their mother's coffin. Spencer says he told a senior royal aide it was not going to happen. Minutes later, he claims, Charles was on the phone, invoking his own walk behind Lord Mountbatten's coffin in 1979. When Spencer pointed out that Charles had been 30 at the time, not a child, the Prince of Wales, in Spencer's telling, went nuts, questioned the Spencer family's sense of duty, and then delivered the line about forgetting Diana.

The Palace response is where this becomes historic. The King's office does not comment on books. It said next to nothing about Spare, nothing much about Oprah, nothing about the Netflix series. This time it has issued a statement suggesting that fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory. Strip away the courtly language and it is the sovereign telling the country that the 9th Earl Spencer has made it up.

I look at why Charles felt he could not let this one ride, what it tells us about relations between the Windsors and the Spencers three decades on, what Harry knew and when he knew it, and why the timing, with Diana's 30th anniversary next August, could hardly be worse.
