British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood Outlines New Immigration Measures

Some migrants who arrived in the UK during the so-called “Boriswave” after Brexit will be forced to wait up to 25 years to get settled status under plans for the most “controlled and selective” rules in Europe.
However, highly-paid migrants will have to wait just three years to apply for indefinite leave to remain, which allows foreign nationals to live, work and study in the UK permanently.
Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, announced that the standard qualifying time for migrants to settle in the UK will double from five to ten years.
The new “earned settlement” rules will apply to an estimated 1.6 million migrants, who will start qualifying for permanent settlement between 2026 and 2030, having arrived in the UK since 2021 as post-Brexit immigration rules led to a surge in people coming to the UK from outside of the EU.
