Brothers Tell (Sam Elliott), Orrin (Tom Selleck), and Tyrell Sackett (Jeff Osterhage) leave their Tennessee home after the Civil War to seek fortune in the West. Tell heads into the mountains prospecting for gold, while Orrin and Tyrell join a cattle drive heading for Santa Fe.
However, trouble follows them at every turn. After killing a gunfighter in self-defense, Tell becomes the target of a vengeful family. Meanwhile, Orrin and Tyrell find themselves caught in a vicious range war between corrupt ranchers and honest settlers.
