Inside Criminal Minds: Britain's Biggest Conmen, tells the incredible true crime stories of some of the world’s most audacious con artists. The stories are told in intricate detail, using reconstruction, archive, original footage and witness interviews from both victims and the police, with psychological analysis from our bank of experts. The stories are all shocking, extreme and filled with twists and turns. Each involve innocent victims being fooled into trusting a convincing con artist and paying a huge price.

This triple bill features three different true stories:

1 - Paul Williams - The Psychic Con
A fake celebrity clairvoyant ended up behind bars after conning a grieving widow out of thousands of dollars.
He falsely counted British celebrities Barbara Windsor and Michael Barrymore as his former clients but he tricked Joyce Sutton out of $10,000 by forging her husband’s will.
Williams, stage name Paul D’Aaran, pretended that Mr Sutton had appeared from beyond the grave and guided him to something behind the grandfather clock.
Williams had placed a forged will there, which left him half of the estate. And this is just the start of his psychic steals that amassed thousands of dollars and heartache for many elderly and vulnerable people.

2 - Robert Hendy-Freegard was labelled by the British press as “The Most Evil Conman Ever”.
Over ten years, Hendy Freegard manipulated the minds of his victims to the extent that he convinced them into believing an Irish Republican Army Provo hit squad was baying for their blood. He managed to extort in excess of $750,000 from the subjects of his crimes, whilst in the process degrading some to the extent that they tolerated beatings, entrapment, mental abuse and one even bore him two children.
Hendy-Freegard convinced at least eight people, both men and women, that he was a British Government MI5 agent covertly observing the IRA. As these people knew him, Hendy-Freegard led them to believe that by association, they had also become targets.
He would then take them “on the run” with him and put them in ludicrous and demeaning situations.
In the meantime his victims were also giving Hendy-Freegard their savings and money borrowed from their families in a bid to help keep them safe. This money was, naturally, spent on fast cars, cool clothes and exotic holidays by Hendy-Freegard.
It was a lawyer, Caroline Cowper, who was his downfall..


3 - Carl Hildebrandt - The man who faked his own death and went on the run in Florida.
Hildebrandt faked his death, allowing everyone to think he drowned (including his family and friends) and assumed a false identity by obtaining a passport in the name of a dead child. Hildebrandt was wanted for stealing around $150,000 in cheques from his girlfriend’s employer. A car rented by him was dragged from a river and though no body was found, he was presumed dead. Hildebrandt had orchestrated the whole operation to fake his own death and fled to Florida, He lived in Florida for 10 years until his deception was outed when he befriended a British tourist...
