As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, civic group GoNigeria has issued a strong warning on the urgent need for comprehensive electoral reforms to safeguard the country’s democracy.
Led by Atedo Peterside, the group outlined four critical pillars for democratic stability: electoral reform, judicial reform, freedom of speech, and the security of life and property.
According to the group, electoral reform remains the foundation upon which trust in leadership, institutions, and governance is built. Without credible elections, they argue, public confidence in democracy will continue to erode.
.GoNigeria referenced past reform efforts inspired by Mohammed Uwais, whose recommendations focused on strengthening the independence of electoral bodies, ensuring transparency, and improving the fairness of dispute resolution processes.
The group noted that technological innovations such as biometric voter registration and electronic accreditation once boosted public confidence, particularly during the 2015 elections. However, it warned that progress has declined since 2019 and 2023 due to inconsistent deployment of technology, weak enforcement of electoral rules, and increasing dependence on the judiciary to determine election outcomes.
This trend, according to the group, has significantly affected trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission. Surveys cited by the group indicate that nationwide confidence in the electoral body has dropped below 50 per cent.
The situation appears more severe in regions such as the South-South and South-East, where distrust is reportedly highest. Among young Nigerians aged 18 to 35, scepticism about the fairness of the electoral system is also growing.
GoNigeria warned that the declining trust in electoral processes poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic legitimacy and long-term stability if urgent reforms are not implemented.
The group is calling on policymakers, institutions, and stakeholders to act decisively to restore confidence and strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic system ahead of the next election cycle.
