Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner of Richmond, Virginia, is called in to examine the body of Ronnie Waddell, a convicted murderer who has just been executed in the electric chair. The case seems closed—until a new murder occurs just days later, bearing the same signature style as Waddell's previous crimes.

Evidence from the scene suggests Waddell’s involvement, despite his execution. Scarpetta begins to suspect that someone is either covering up the truth or manipulating the investigation. As she digs deeper, she uncovers corruption within the justice system and realizes that someone inside may be orchestrating events.

With the help of tough detective Pete Marino and her brilliant niece Lucy, a tech-savvy student at the FBI Academy, Scarpetta uncovers a disturbing web of deceit, betrayal, and danger. Soon, she realizes that the killer may be watching her—and planning to strike again.
