The racing cyclists of Burundi carry heavy, bulky loads: several bunches of bananas, bundles of firewood, doors and cupboards, and passengers. There is room for almost everything and everyone on their old, rusty bikes. Whatever they can fit on the carrier is transported. They travel on winding roads, full of potholes and always going up and down hills.
Burundi - the land of 1000 hills. National Road No. 1 winds its way through a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, past banana, coffee and tea plantations, palm groves and small, bustling villages. It runs from the border with Rwanda in the north to the capital Bujumbura. From there, national road number 3 runs south along the shores of the great Lake Tanganyika all the way to Tanzania.
As the roads are like a roller coaster, cyclists hang on to trucks as they struggle uphill, emitting black clouds of exhaust fumes. Downhill, they let go of the trucks and race down into the valley at high speed. Then they can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour on their rickety wheels. A life-threatening and illegal undertaking. Serious accidents happen time and again. But the bicycle transporters have little choice if they want to get their goods from their villages to Bujumbura and earn money from selling them.
We accompany three racing cyclists on their breakneck tours. They also take us to places along the road: a banana beer brewery, a radio station that caters to the needs of cyclists, drummers and a fishing village on Lake Tanganyika.
