Keir Starmer is under increasing pressure to step down as prime minister after a bruising result in the local elections last week.

While the Labour leader is currently standing firm in his position, telling his Cabinet on Tuesday morning that they should "get on with governing", there is one name that keeps popping up amid speculation that a new party leader could soon emerge.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, the former MP for Leigh, has already made it clear that he wants to return to Westminster as an MP after attempting to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election earlier this year. However, the move was blocked by Labour's ruling committee, the NEC, as it would trigger a costly mayoral election to replace him.

Keir managed to cling on to power and see off an immediate threat to his leadership on Tuesday despite four ministers, some of whom are close to Mr Streeting, resigning and at least 80 MPs demanding he stand down.
