| A Rarely Seen Denzel Washington Throwback
BLACKTREE MEDIA SATURDAY SHOWCASE: FOR QUEEN AND COUNTRY (1988) ????????????
Before Glory, Malcolm X, Training Day, and the legendary career that followed, Denzel Washington delivered a powerful performance in this rarely seen British throwback.
In For Queen and Country, Denzel plays Reuben James, a decorated Black paratrooper who returns from military service expecting opportunity and respect. Instead, he finds racism, unemployment, police hostility, and a country unwilling to honor his sacrifice.
???? MOVIE SYNOPSIS
Born in Saint Lucia and raised in London, Reuben James joins the British Army to escape the poverty surrounding his inner-city neighborhood.
After serving in Northern Ireland and fighting in the Falklands War, Reuben returns home believing his military record will help him build a stable civilian life.
Instead, he discovers a community devastated by poverty, drugs, crime, and aggressive policing. Employers reject him, government officials deny his rights, and even his British citizenship is placed in question.
When legitimate opportunities disappear, Reuben is pulled toward the criminal world of an old friend. As tensions between residents and police escalate, the former soldier must decide where his loyalty belongs when the country he served refuses to recognize him.

???? FILM NOTES
Released between Cry Freedom and Glory, For Queen and Country captures Denzel Washington at a fascinating moment just before his rise to international stardom.
The film was initially overlooked but has since been reconsidered as a forceful critique of Thatcher-era Britain, systemic racism, neglected veterans, and the economic abandonment of working-class communities.
Denzel received the Best Actor award at the Cognac Festival du Film Policier for his performance.
???? WHY THIS FILM MATTERS
For Queen and Country asks what patriotism means when a nation accepts a Black man’s service but denies him dignity, opportunity, and even citizenship when he returns home.
Reuben’s struggle reflects the experiences of veterans who survive war only to be abandoned by the institutions they served. The film also explores how unemployment, racism, and police pressure can push people toward choices they once believed they would never make.
This rarely seen performance proves that even before becoming one of cinema’s most celebrated actors, Denzel Washington possessed the presence, conviction, and emotional power that would define his extraordinary career.
