Fuel Subsidy: President Tinubu breached his own electoral promise - Demola Olarenwaju
.
.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s camp says he would temporarily reintroduce a form of petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027, as Nigerians continue to face high fuel prices and a wider cost-of-living crisis. Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, says the proposal would make crude oil available to local refineries at a discounted price, allowing them to produce petrol and diesel more cheaply. He says the intervention would give households and businesses time to adjust while reducing pressure on consumers. Ibe also argues that the Tinubu administration moved too quickly with petrol subsidy removal, foreign exchange reforms and electricity subsidy withdrawal. The proposal has reignited debate over the future of fuel subsidies, their cost and whether a temporary intervention can reduce prices without repeating the problems of the previous subsidy regime.
