Based on the autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee, this made-for-TV movie, previously a Broadway smash and a 1962 film, depicts the life and times of a stripper and her domineering mother.

Adapted from the original Broadway musical with Book by Arthur Laurents (based on the real story of Gypsy Rose Lee, her mother and sister, actress June Havoc) and Music by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim. The musical features legendary numbers like Some People, Small World, Let Me Entertain You, Everything's Coming Up Roses, Together Wherever We Go, and Rose's Turn

Midler takes the reins on Mama Rose, one of the tour-de-force female lead characters in the history of Broadway and movie musicals, following in the footsteps of Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly on Broadway, and Rosalind Russell in the early '60s movie rendition of Gypsy.
