Pounded Yam belongs to the category of Nigerian food referred to as 'swallows'. Never mind that some people actually chew on this food. So basically pounded yam is made from pieces of boiled yam tubers . The yam is peeled, cut into pieces cooked till soft and pounded in a mortar. In more recent times though the yam has been made into flour , making it easy to prepare by just stirring the yam slurry over a burner. The question is can we still call this pounded yam? Well it is called 'poundo' yam.
Pounded yam is generally eaten with soups but it is also used to thicken soups.
