A British undercover reporter has become the very first journalist to cross the English Channel in a migrant dinghy - exposing the criminal people smugglers and chaos on the French beaches to enter the UK.
Talk’s International Editor Isabel Oakeshott worked with reporter Christian Drogan, of Watchman UK, to successfully cross the English Channel from France to Britain inside an illegal migrant dinghy. Working alongside Oakeshott, Drogan spent weeks embedded deep within human trafficking networks across the channel while living on the streets and in migrant camps, as a British criminal on the run.
Drogan was trying to return to the UK undetected, documenting the multi-million-pound people-smuggling infrastructure operating across northern France. The investigation exposes every link in the smuggling chain, from the initial contact with organised smuggling gangs advertising on TikTok, through the well established Dunkirk and Calais “jungles”.
Drogan captured rare, high-tension footage of drug usage in camps and chaotic scenes, women trapped on overcrowded dinghies, and heavily armed Gendarmes aiming guns towards migrants and chauffeuring smugglers. Drogan believes that findings from this investigation raises many questions surrounding the French and British authorities' inability to deal with this crisis.
Oakeshott said, “This is the culmination of a year of painstaking groundwork and intelligence gathering. There is a very good reason no reporter has ever attempted such a mission before: because it is both extraordinarily difficult, and extraordinarily dangerous.
“Getting to the truth of what is really happening in the Channel simply isn't possible from the safety of the beaches. It cannot be done by politicians, or anyone waving a notebook or camera. The only way is by going undercover. Watchman Investigations, in association with Talk, goes where others do not dare, to get to the truth of the biggest political issues facing our country."
Drogan said: “I rolled the dice with my life for this investigation, and its findings have only cemented my scepticism towards the establishment. This type of investigation is dangerous, but so are the people running our country. Truth is the most effective weapon in this fight, and that is why this kind of work has to be done.”
A Home Office spokesperson said: “This individual's actions were reckless. They made it more difficult for law enforcement officers to stop small boat crossings and save lives in dangerous conditions.
"Our partnership with France is stronger than ever, with a new deal signed by the Home Secretary delivering a 40% uplift in boots on the ground. Together, we are piling the pressure on the criminal gangs and preventing illegal and dangerous crossings. Over 1100 boats or engines have been seized since the election, 47000 crossing attempts have been prevented, and the number of small boats crossings are down.”
