Yet Palestinians Remain Under Rubble & in Israeli Jails: Anald phase of the Gaza ceasefire is now in focus, centred on reopening the Rafah crossing for aid and people as agreed.
However, Israel is already imposing new conditions, stating it will only allow movement under its "full oversight" and for people, not unrestricted humanitarian aid.
Mustafa Barghouti, leader of the Palestinian National Initiative, told Al Jazeera from Ramallah that with Phase 1 of the ceasefire complete, attention must now turn to Phase 2, which demands the Rafah crossing reopen in both directions.
He said Israel’s insistence on reopening only after recovering the last captive’s body is unjustified, stressing there are “no excuses left” for blocking movement or aid.
Barghouti condemned the global focus on one Israeli body while thousands of Palestinian bodies remain under rubble or in Israeli custody, asking who will pressure Israel to release the “10,000 Palestinian captives” and “700 bodies” still held.
He warned that Israel is violating the ceasefire unilaterally, claiming it has breached the agreement “1,300 times,” killing hundreds, including children.
Barghouti also warned that Israel will try to “manipulate” Rafah’s reopening by imposing “more restrictions,” deciding who may enter Gaza and limiting the numbers, despite tens of thousands waiting on the Egyptian side.
He urged Egypt, Qatar and the United States to force Israel to allow “true free movement,” especially for patients and medical teams, and said the US is the only party with real leverage to make that happen.
