Fourteen-year-old Homer Macauley is determined to become the finest and fastest bicycle telegraph messenger anyone has ever known. With his older brother away fighting in the war, Homer takes on the responsibility of caring for his widowed mother, his older sister, and his little brother, Ulysses, who is just four years old. As the spring of 1942 gives way to summer, Homer faithfully delivers messages filled with love, hope, sorrow, and loss to the residents of Ithaca.
