LIVE: Andy Burnham faces MPs as UK government APPROVES Jackdaw gas field

The controversial Jackdaw gas field in Scotland has been granted a drilling licence following a long legal battle.

The project, off the coast of Aberdeen, has been in limbo for two years after the High Court ruled a previous approval was invalid. Environmental groups had called for it be scrapped, while supporters said it would support up to 3,500 jobs and generate billions of pounds in tax revenues.

PM Andy Burnham said the project will “protect hundreds of jobs and help keep millions of homes warm”, and insisted it would not hinder the Government’s targets on renewable energy.

Although the government has said it wants to move away from fossil fuels and focus on greener sources of power, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the resulting sanctions has led to sharp rises in energy prices. This has been made worse by Donald Trump's chaotic war in Iran, leading to calls to ramp up use of North Sea oil and gas.

Andy Burnham will face Kemi Badenoch at PMQs from 12pm.
