"Portrait of a Bourgeois in Black" (original title: Ritratto di borghesia in nero) is an intense 1978 Italian drama film directed by Tonino Cervi, based on the novel "The Piano Teacher" by Roger Peyrefitte.

Plot: Set in Venice in 1938, on the eve of World War II, the film explores the tensions and hypocrisies of high society. The young and talented pianist Mattia Morandi (Stefano Patrizi) moves to the city on a scholarship and becomes the student and lover of his mature and fascinating piano teacher, Carla Richter (Senta Berger). The balance is shattered when Mattia falls deeply in love with the young and beautiful Elena Mazzarini (Ornella Muti), the daughter of a powerful bourgeois family. The passion between the two young lovers unleashes the obsessive jealousy of Carla who, feeling betrayed and abandoned, enacts a vengeful plan to destroy their love. The story becomes a noir-tinged tragedy, revealing the dark and ruthless side of a seemingly perfect world, where power and money can cover up any scandal.
