"On Oct 1st 1960 I was still a student at Government College Ibadan, we were looking forward to the day of Independence which we thought at that time was the day of liberation," said HRM Oba Kole Ojutalayo. "We expected absolute freedom."

53 years ago, even before the National anthem was written, Federation of Nigeria got her Independence and freedom and then became the Republic of Nigeria.

But what was Nigeria like 53 years ago? What were the hopes and aspirations of the then youth and Leaders of tomorrow - who are now elderly men? Some witnesses to Nigeria's Independence share their experiences with BattaBox presenter, Odunayo.

"In 1960 I was 4years old and I remembered vividly when they said the queen was coming, we were asked to come outside and we were looking so innocent, I was there," added Oba Kolapo Ibiyemi.

But how about the Nigerian rulers during Independence? What were they expecting? What went wrong?

"Unfortunately, the ruling class did not understand what independence meant, they thought it was the beginning of sharing the loot that was in Nigeria," said Oba Ojutalayo.

Odunayo went ahead to ask how they felt about Nigeria presently and some of their answers were indifferent.

"I'm happy for the country, but things would still get better, I believe that, but it will take us time, "replied High chief Akinola Disu, "I still believe in Nigeria," he added.

"It is your generation that can look forward to that better Nigeria, and you better don't spoil it,"Oba Ojutalayo tells Odunayo.

Nigeria is a land of Hope and Glory. And as we love to pray, we hope and pray for a much better Nigeria.
