Norway’s new King Haakon delivered an emotional tribute to his late father King Harald, noting that his parents would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on Saturday.
In his remarks, King Haakon remembered the strength of the relationship between King Harald and Queen Sonja, describing his mother as a life partner who helped the couple become a strong royal team.
Haakon said he knew how much Queen Sonja meant to King Harald and how she supported him throughout the work they shared. He ended the tribute with a deeply personal message to his mother: “Happy wedding anniversary, dear Mom.”
The emotional moment came just one day after King Harald V died at the age of 89, bringing an end to more than three decades on the Norwegian throne.
As Norway mourns its late monarch, attention has shifted to the country's new king. Crown Prince Haakon automatically became King Haakon following his father's death under Norway's constitutional monarchy.
Haakon is scheduled to take his oath before parliament on September 1, swearing to uphold Norway's constitution and laws. There will be no coronation, as Norway abolished coronations in 1908.
