PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is medication taken by people who are HIV-negative to reduce their risk of acquiring HIV. When taken correctly, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV through sex by around 99%. But PrEP only works properly when it is taken consistently and with the right medical follow-up.
This video explains the difference between daily PrEP and event-based PrEP, also known as on-demand PrEP or 2-1-1 PrEP. I cover who event-based PrEP may be suitable for, when daily PrEP may be the better option, and why you should not guess which dosing method is right for you.
You will also learn why an HIV test is essential before starting PrEP, why kidney function and STI screening are checked, what PrEP side effects can occur, what to do if you miss a PrEP dose, and how to stop PrEP safely.
I also explain an important limitation: PrEP protects against HIV, but it does not protect against chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, herpes, other sexually transmitted infections, or pregnancy.

PrEP is extremely effective, but inconsistent use can reduce your protection.
