Private Peaceful
.
.
A court martial has given its verdict, and a young soldier sits awake counting the hours until morning. Behind him is a childhood in an English village: a father lost in the woods, a mother working for a Colonel who owns the cottage they live in, an older brother called Big Joe who sees the world his own way, and Charlie, who always said honest when it was not true. There was a girl too. Molly, who read the future in river stones and promised they would be lucky as long as they stayed together. Then the recruiting bands came through the village, and the brothers went to France with the same name on their papers. One of them obeyed an order. One of them did not. By dawn, only one of those choices will still matter.
