Fans of The Hound Of The Baskervilles, Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Georges Simenon's Inspector Maigret cannot miss this entertaining chapter in the long-running Sherlock Holmes mystery movies series. Sherlock Holmes, a character originally created by novelist Arthur Conan Doyle, is played this time by Christopher Lee.

The narrative unfolds as the master sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his loyal companion Dr. John Watson are drawn into a high-stakes confrontation with their perennial nemesis, Professor Moriarty. The object of their mutual obsession is a priceless ancient necklace once belonging to Cleopatra, which has surfaced in London under mysterious circumstances. As the artifact is stolen and restolen, Holmes must navigate a web of deception and murder, utilizing his razor-sharp deductive reasoning to outmaneuver a criminal mastermind who is always one step ahead. The chase leads them from the fog-shrouded streets of the capital to the inner sanctums of the criminal underworld, culminating in a desperate struggle to prevent the artifact from falling into the wrong hands and triggering a broader catastrophe.

This 1962 production serves as a fascinating entry in the suspense-drama genre, specifically within the sub-genre of the classical detective procedural. Director Terence Fisher, largely celebrated for his seminal work in gothic horror, brings a measured, stately pace to the proceedings, emphasizing the psychological duel between Holmes and Moriarty. The film explores recurring Holmesian themes of intellectual vanity, the corrupting nature of historical artifacts, and the thin line between law and chaotic ambition. Historically, "Sherlock Holmes And The Deadly Necklace" arrived at a time when the Sherlock Holmes character was transitioning from the definitive Basil Rathbone era into a more varied European cinematic landscape. Terence Fisher was already a titan at Hammer Films, having directed The Curse of Frankenstein and Dracula, and this project allowed him to revisit the Holmes universe after his success with The Hound Of The Baskervilles in 1959.

For Christopher Lee, this was a pivotal turn; having previously played Sir Henry Baskerville, he here stepped into the shoes of the hero, demonstrating his range beyond the monstrous roles that defined his early fame. The production is also notable for the involvement of legendary screenwriter Curt Siodmak, the man behind The Wolf Man. Technically, the film is often remembered for its troubled post-production; the original sound recordings were discarded, leading to an English version where Lee’s iconic voice is replaced by a voice actor, a decision that has contributed to the film's status as a cult curiosity. Despite this, the film’s use of noir-influenced lighting and its attempt to adapt elements of The Valley Of Fear reflect the evolving genre trends of early 1960s European crime cinema.
