Storm Boelo has sparked flooding across Scotland as 84mph gusts left thousands of homes without power.

The carnage hit shortly after Storm Austen brought heavy rain to many areas on Friday. The Met Office had warned of potential injuries and danger to life from flying debris as well as a chance of damage to buildings and travel disruption.

More than 30,000 homes across Scotland are experiencing power outages after Storm Boelo battered the country overnight. As of 11am on Sunday, just in excess of 24,000 Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) customer properties were affected by power outages.

Ayrshire appears to have been one of the worst hit areas, with business owners telling the Record of the devastation. Geraldo’s, a popular family-run tourist shop in Largs, sustained major damage overnight into Sunday.

There was also widespread flooding in Saltcoats, Greenock and Paisley.

The island of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides experienced 82mph winds at about 4am on Sunday, according to the forecaster.

Maximum gust speeds of 75mph hit South Uist Range, Western Isles, Highland and Eilean Siar, Scotland, earlier on Saturday, according to the Met Office, which has also issued several yellow warnings for rain.

Storm Boelo follows Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, which brought strong winds to parts of the UK on Friday.

Gusts of 76mph were recorded at St Mary’s Airport in the Isles of Scilly, with 74mph at Aberporth in south Wales and 71mph at Culdrose in Cornwall.

Footage also showed Blackpool battered by Storm Boelo as heavy winds hit some of the famous landmarks in the town.
