Germany's president Frank-Walter Steinmeier has warned that the US-Israeli war on Iran is a "breach of international law," stating that the justification of an imminent attack on the United States "does not hold water." France's military chief also voiced frustration, accusing Washington of being an "unreliable partner" that does not bother to inform allies before launching military operations.
Retired British Army General Simon Mayall, a former Middle East advisor at the UK Ministry of Defence, told Al Jazeera that the remarks reveal "worrying cracks" in the long-standing alignment between the US and its European NATO allies. He warned that the conflict is straining transatlantic ties and that weakening coordination between allies could have serious long-term consequences for Western democracies.
Mayall noted that Britain traditionally acts as a bridge between the US and Europe, but that position is now under pressure. While he said the UK's military position remains secure and its bases in Cyprus and Diego Garcia are not under credible threat, its strategic interests in the Gulf—where Britain has deep relationships and hundreds of thousands of citizens—remain significant. He cautioned that continued attacks could draw Gulf states into the conflict, further destabilising the region, and added that Iran itself appears "extremely worried" that its regime is "brittle" and "under threat."
